Rio de Colores ReviewS&F have steered their musical muse into a more listenable wind with the release of "Rio de Colores". If you like "world music" with a distinct latin sound powered by afrocuban rhythm, a la "Americas", "Primal Magic" and "Heat of the Sun", then this disc is for you. That being said, many of the compositions are more musically complex than those found on the aforementioned cd's. I found it took a few listens to really appreciate this release. There is a distinct South American/Andean flavor to the first few tracks that I found quite pleasant. From there, S&F get a little more obscure and jazzy, and finally a middle eastern theme emerges on the back end of the disc. Thematically diverse, but musically rewarding.
If you liked "Wild Muse" (I did not, but a few tracks do stand out, nonetheless), then you won't like the overall direction of "Rio de Colores". You would find a few tracks worthy of a listen however. Readers of a previous review/attack may have deduced this fact already. Bottom line is it's all a matter of personal taste.
Finally, if S&F have to put out another disc that appeals to the muscially ignorant (translation: non-jazz appreciative) masses that sells tons, I am happy to see the musical course righted into its present direction.
