T'Pau - Greatest Hits: Heart & Soul ReviewThis compilation is something of a curiosity. While the listing says Greatest Hits: Heart & Soul, the cover clearly reads The Very Best Of T'Pau -- a minor discrepancy, but one that helps to illustrate my lack of enthusiasm for this particular collection. Most of the songs here were indeed hit singles in Europe, but the careless omission of some of their overlooked songs easily disqualifies it from being labeled as the band's very best work.T'Pau's third album, The Promise, had its best material largely ignored. The title song, as well as A Place In My Heart, Hold On To Love, and Strange Place could have done well on the charts had they been released as singles and would be ideal choices for a compilation such as this. The fact that they are not included here only compounds the injustice of not receiving the attention they deserve.
The best and most comprehensive collection of music by T'Pau is the 17-track disc that is simply titled Greatest Hits. It includes everything on this disc plus the four songs I mentioned and is about as good of an overview of the band as you could ask for. In 2005 it was reissued with the same 17 songs, a different cover, and an even shorter title (Hits), and either one of them would make for a more satisfying investment.
