Two Doors ReviewThe first thing you must know about this album is it's genre. This disk is a New Age record for sure. What that means is its music contains a sort of earthy and relaxed feel, using mostly acoustic instruments and minor tribal and spanish sounding influences with minimal synth and digital affects (in this record's case). The goal (as stated in the CD's booklet) was to leave the music unadulterated and natural, which it perfectly achieves. If this genre interests you or if you are a music lover with an open mind, you will like this record. The musicianship of Watanabe (playing on basically all string instruments, except violin) is astounding and emotion-full. The production is top-notch and leaves all instruments with plenty of breathing room while still bundling them together nicely, and neatly leaving a little front space for the melodies without anything else being shadowed. The only real problem lies with the flow of the record. Some of the songs occassionally follow too similar of routes, a bit in rhythm, but mostly in the use of the 12 string fretless guitar as the front piece on the majority of the songs. However, this problem really is a minor one due to the fact that the album is entirely instrumental and is not really ment to have too serious of hooks. Thus, the album works amazingly as ambience for studying, working, sleeping, etc. The record also offers a bit of change for those listeners not putting it to total atmospheric purposes by offering the tracks "Waterland", a short acoustic bass solo about half-way through the CD, and "Emmanuel", a lilting, sadder song that features a sort of trading duet between the 12 string fretless guitar and the piano, an intsrument not present on any other tracks, giving the whole album a wonderfully fitting and special end.Two Doors Overview
