Capture & Release (Bonus Dvd) Reviewpure aural torture!!!4 1/2 stars b/c their self-titled effort set the bar very, very high. and if it's at all possible, on 'capture & release', khanate have slowed down dramatically...the two tracks here make 'skin coat' from the self-titled seem almost like grindcore by comparison.
4 1/2 stars b/c dubin's lyrics may have regressed a bit as far as content is concerned. (from spectacular obviousness on the s/t, to more abstract on 'things viral'.) however, the delivery is still quite strong. his pained throat conveys exactly what this quartet is trying to accomplish: a release; a purging; a disgusting, filthy display of emotion through sound.
4 1/2 stars b/c plotkin's production work may have been too perfect. it struck me as being a little crisp for this gritty style. the sub tones are there and seem more powerful than on previous efforts, but SOMA's guitar work seemed overly conspicuous; and that may not even be a production flaw...it may just be.
4 stars b/c wyskida is vastly underused. though the sound of his drum-bludgeoning is welcome when it arrives. the ambient plodding without him on past efforts induced this trance-like state, but this time around there wasn't enough to envelop me.
but, hey...it's only an EP and i worship these guys so much, i'm damn thankful that this came out when it did b/c my self-titled and 'things viral' copies have been played so much, i was beginning to suffer from aural torture neglect; i didn't feel as filthy as i did back when.
let's be honest, you're going to buy this. how can you deny yourself?...pleasure through pain, people.
