Indian Summer ReviewI heard of Greg Fishman from the Stan Getz blog group here at Amazon and gave him a try. This is a rare treat for someone searching out that Sound from a living sax man. Of the few albums I have heard by this Greg Fishman, he plays velvety, lyrical, sculpted tones here, consistently pleasing and well thought-out complex phrases, doing mostly standards. Greg is his own person, but certainly in that lyrical tradition.
Tenor sax is an odd instrument, a woodwind with a brass body. If you are careful with your embrasure (sp?) and breath you get a pleasant woodwind tone, if you blow too hard you get a real harsh buzzing brass edge. Getz, who Greg Fishman spent a lot of time listening to, had a wonderful tone, perhaps the best in the biz. Rather than having yet another Coltrane imitator, younger muscians would do well, (and sell a whole lot more albums), learning how to make good sounding notes like Getz - "The Sound".
I would love to hear Mr Fishman in concert.
I particularly like the warm romantic treatment of title song "Indian Summer". "O Grande Amor" is like the Getz/Gilberto Bossa Nova period. "Hershey Bar" ("Tootsie Roll"?) is happy version of a early 50's Getz standard by Johnny Mandel. Most songs are andante (walking tempo) or ballads except for the the faster "What is this thing called Love". Pianist Eddie Higgins meshes well like Kenny Barron or Al Haig, occationally taking the lead. He is the best pianist I've heard with Greg Fishman.

All highly Recommended, romantic, lyrical, cool jazz, relaxing. The most listenable of my recent purchases. In high rotation at my house.
