Flying Nun: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Box Set ReviewRoger Shepherd--shame on you! The price and packaging of this set stinks. The booklet is written in helvetica-typo-font (barely readable) and the liner notes for each CD offer no clues into the bands on the CDs. Additionally, the bubble-gum wrapper collage box as well as the cheap plastic inner lining compounds the problem. So why is this thing so necessary? Almost 5 and 1/2 hours of damned interesting and compelling music warrant a 4 star rating. None of the material here is unreleased; I have a bit of it on vinyl. Also, the CDs do not follow a chronological order--one track from 1981, the next from 1999.
But all of it (yes, 4 CDs worth) is essential for anyone interested in the New Zealand scene as a newcomer or as a vet like myself. Simply put, this is fun. At the time of this review, the price had dropped substantially. For the price of a good dinner or pair of shoes, you can own music history.
