Top Secret Reviewtommy mccook, one of the seminal leaders of jamaican music mainly as the leader of the skatalites, recorded this album in 1969. ska music-- really an amalgam of mento, r&b, and fats domino-inspired new orleans boogie-woogie... and invented by mr. mccook and his bandmates in the late 50s and early 60s-- had evolved into blue beat, then the rock steady, then the poppatop (track 14 here being a good example), and then the reggae. even so, mr. mccook never abandoned the instrumentalist's compositional writing style, writing music that consisted of immediately engaging and FUN horn charts and leaving room for plenty of improvisation. think of most of his work as "songs without words." and i can't help but think that mr. mccook continued to be inspired by his old bandmate, the troubled trombonist don drummond, whose compositional style was all about sweet hooks.
this album finds mr. mccook accompanied by his old skatalite bandmates mr. knibbs a superb and innovative drummer and mr. brevett a superb and innovative bass player, ie two giants of jamaican music.
