The Primitive Sounds of Henny Youngman ReviewThe troubled history of NRC or National Recording Corp. of Atlanta, GA, manufacturer of THE PRIMITIVE SOUNDS OF HENNY YOUNGMAN, includes bankruptcy only three years after its 1958 founding, a change of ownership in '62 and complete dissolution eight years later. This poly-vinyl LP is their tenth release and represents a departure from the country-flavored sounds NRC specialized in.
The British-born Youngman, who was known as the King of One-Liners, cut the 78 rpm disc "Gags and Super Gags" in 1940. As this LP shows, Henny was still using that same word-for-word material nearly 20 years later and probably did so right until his pneumonia-related death in 1998 at age 91.
Youngman's rapid-fire jokes punctuated with fiddle-playing can either make a listener giggly or grate on the nerves. There's simply no middle ground when it comes to this unusual comic.
