Time in Carouge: Moncef Genoud in New York Review"Time In Carouge" was recorded in New York City in 2002 and released in Japan by Polystar Jazz Library the following year. This is Moncef's first collaboration with the top-notch New York rhythm section of Bill Stewart and Larry Grenadier. This album marked another important step in Moncef's developing career, truly establishing him as a composer and arranger to be reckoned with in the circle of elite jazz pianists.

The set opens with "Prelude", a superb ballad by Moncef, indicative of his style. Highly intimate, it showcases Moncef's ability to let a tune breathe, allowing for Bill's delicate brush play and Larry's precise bass notes to come through. "Time In Carouge", the title track, was inspired by this neighborhood of Geneva, Switzerland, where Moncef enjoys hanging out. It swings like a Latin tune and boils over with energy. "Foncef", the title of which is a play on words between "Moncef" and "foncer", "to go really fast" in French, highly reminds of Monk thanks to a combination of dissonance and resolution, along with its tempo changes. Larry and Bill engage in singular solos, before Moncef's speedy fingers reaffirm the theme one last time. Mr. Monk is once again referenced with "Reflections", his standard nicely covered by the trio. The fifth track is "Waiting for Birth", another Moncef classic, originally from the album of the same name from the early 90's. A very moody melody intertwines with the mostly minor chords and modulations of the tune, perfectly carried by Bill and Larry. "Simple Waltz" is yet another delicate caress, an unpretentious delight to the ears, followed by a cover of "Giant Steps", which Moncef takes forward, changing the rhythm to 3/4 and back to the usual 4/4, all the while improvising effortlessly and engagingly. "Lovely Vidj", which Moncef will revisit with Michael Brecker on the album "Aqua", is a sweet and moving piece dedicated to that special someone. The album closes with "Opossum", an intense and difficult number which Moncef manages with ease, finishing in a big collective crash by the piano, bass and cymbals, as if to say, "Watch out, Moncef Genoud has arrived!"Time in Carouge: Moncef Genoud in New York Overview
