Venus Trail ReviewThis album is quite possibly one of the most schizophrenic albums ever recorded. Rubbing the pure, pastoral pop songs of golden-throated bassist Denise Roughan with the ugly, jarring, angular rants of David Mitchell (also the creator of the album's rather disturbing cover art), "The Venus Trail" initially comes across as a study in polar opposites, with second guitarist David Saunders' work checking in somewhere in between these extremes. However, after repeated listens, Mitchell's flair for a hook muscles through the guitar scree and manic shrieking, causing these rather angular and strange songs to actually get stuck in one's head. Frequently compared to indie stalwarts Pavement, the 3D's actually have a sound all their own: with three distinctive songwriting voices, these progenitors of the New Zealand indie scene can easily hold their own with any more popular American or British indie rock band. "The Venus Trail" does mark a change from their poppier, fuzzier earlier releases, especially the brilliant "Hellzapoppin", where David Saunders contributes the lion's share of the best songs (unlike "Vemus Trail", where he only sings two, which are among the album's higlights). The pop is poppier and the rock is harsher and more discordant, making for a slightly unsettling listen in the end. However, while "The Venus Trail" may not be the 3D's best, it is the only disc of theirs still in print in the US, so one takes what one can get.Venus Trail Overview
