Commercial Album (Mlps) ReviewIt's 1980 and how many single LPs have 40 songs on them? Not many, maybe none. But this one does. And they're all one minute long. There's a reason for that too. The sleeve notes explain that most pop songs are three minutes long and consist of a chorus and verse repeated three times. So cut out the fat and a pop song (or jingle) is really just one minute long. Therefore The Residents recorded the Commercial Album: an album of 40 one-minute 'pop songs'. And while this concept may sound like a far fetched gimmick it works surprisingly well.
Now The Residents' idea of a pop song differs quite a bit from the general opinion. These are The Residents, after all. That anonymous bunch of non-musicians, not exactly known for their catchy tunes. So most songs are based on quirky electronic rhythms, the arrangements are unusual, most lyrics weird, the singing not always pleasant. These 'pop songs' would never survive on Top 40 radio.
However, compared to their earlier releases (like Meet The Residents and The Third Reich N Roll) the Commercial Album is quite accessible. It's still an acquired taste but it won't have your cat climb the curtains and can serve well as an introduction to the band.
So what about the music? In the CD booklet it is suggested to program your CD player to repeat each track three times, to convert the one-minute concentrates to standard pop songs. For fun I've tried that and in some cases it works really well. There's no need for it, though. The 40 tracks are fine as they are. It's amazing to hear how well The Residents have managed to construct 40 little gems, 40 miniature songs that aren't bothered by their one-minute limits at all. Somehow they all fit nicely in their one-minute straight jackets and it never sounds artificial or contrived.
The tracks are quite varied. Some are tuneful little ditties, happily bobbing along, others have darker tones, some border on industrial rock. Most of the music is based on electronics, with added guitars, vocals, and sometimes drums. It is difficult to compare The Residents to other groups but if you're interested in music that's alternative, electronic, or 'experimental-without-becoming-unlistenable', there's a fair chance you'll like this one. If I have to throw some names at you I'd say that if you like Zappa, Eno, Primus, Beefheart, or Radiohead, you might like the Residents too. Not that they sound anything like these guys.
The Commercial Album is a good place to start exploring The Residents' music, with their Mark of the Mole / Intermission (Reis) release as a close second. In my opinion the Commercial Album contains some of the band's finest tracks. And also their shortest, obviously.Commercial Album (Mlps) Overview
